‘Indo-Japan trade not merely a corridor but a strategic supply chain partnership’

Logistics networks and resilient supply chains are a key facet of deepening trade ties between India and Japan. Trade between India and Japan constitutes a critical partnership and holds strategic value, not just for the two countries but the region. Hemant Pimplikar, managing director, sales, FedEx, while speaking at the India Today Indo-Japan Conclave in New Delhi on May 22, said that speed and reliability are two important pillars of the growing trade between India and Japan.

Pimplikar was addressing the session ‘Building a resilient network to drive India-Japan trade’. He presented an overview of the bilateral trade. Trade between the two countries stands at $27 billion, of which $6 billion are exports while imports stand at $21 billion. The high impact growth sectors are semi-conductors, pharma, minerals, green energy, AI, digital and scientific cooperation.

Globally, FedEx is present in 220 countries. Pimplikar said the logistics major, with all its strengths, was in a position to play a crucial role in Indo-Japan trade. FedEx has an annual revenue of $88 billion and three million shippers. The company serves around 225 million consumers across the world. It has a fleet of 698 cargo aircraft and 200,000 motorised vehicles. It handles 16 million packages daily.

FedEx has strong logistics connections between India and Japan, serving Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru and Narita and Osaka in Japan on a daily basis. The goods transferred between India and Japan can be divided into three prominent sectors: industrial, healthcare and hi-tech.

Pimplikar listed the infrastructure being expanded by FedEx in India, including an investment of $250 million to build a state-of-the-art air cargo hub at the Navi Mumbai International Airport. FedEx recently expanded its footprint in India by adding a 60,000 sq feet integrated air hub at the Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru, bringing its total coverage in the city to 1 lakh sq feet. FedEx covers 20,000 postal codes in India. This coverage would go a long way in expanding trade ties between India and Japan.
