An emotional Ishan Kishan gave a fiery send-off to the Chennai Super Kings crowd at Chepauk after SunRisers Hyderabad defeated CSK to qualify for the playoffs in the Indian Premier League 2026 season on Monday, May 18.
After SRH sealed a five-wicket win with six balls remaining, Kishan walked towards the stands and gestured, blowing a whistle with his fingers before motioning towards the crowd as he made his way back to the dressing room.
The gesture appeared to be a response to the constant jeering from the Chepauk crowd during his innings. Chasing 181 runs on a tricky black-soil surface in Chennai, SRH had to battle not just the conditions, but also the deafening support for CSK throughout the chase.
Kishan, however, held his nerve superbly.
The left-hander anchored the innings with a brilliant 70 off 47 balls and played a massive role in guiding Hyderabad into the playoffs for the second time in three seasons. His innings helped stabilise the chase during difficult phases and ensured that SRH remained in control despite a few wickets falling around him.
After initially rotating strike while Heinrich Klaasen attacked the CSK bowlers aggressively, Kishan shifted gears following Klaasen’s dismissal in the 15th over and took the game away from Chennai in the final phase of the chase.
His knock ultimately made things easier for uncapped batters Salil Arora and Smaran Ravichandran, who calmly finished the game in the 19th over.

SRH had struggled badly on black-soil surfaces earlier in the season, most notably when they were bowled out for just 86 against Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad. This time, however, Kishan adapted beautifully to the pace of the wicket and resisted the temptation to throw his wicket away despite the pressure created by the crowd and the match situation.
Speaking after the game, Kishan revealed the emotional motivation behind his innings and dedicated the victory to his cousin and family, who had gone through a personal tragedy earlier during the T20 World Cup 2026.
“Sometimes I feel it’s about motivation and for me, my motivation was today my cousin who is standing there. He lost his sister. It was a tough time in the family. They are watching the match for the first time, so I wanted to finish the game for them,” Kishan said after the match.
“I’m glad they were here to witness this innings and I was able to finish this game. I was blessed from upstairs. I had that sense of power. If we qualify, he will be happy about it,” he added.

Kishan’s celebration at the end perhaps revealed more than just adrenaline from a high-pressure win.
Professional athletes are often judged only by what they produce on the field, but moments like these offer a glimpse into the emotional weight they carry while performing at the highest level. Even as thousands inside Chepauk jeered him throughout the chase, Kishan had to shut out the noise, process personal grief within his family and still deliver one of the most important innings of SRH’s season.
That is the difficult reality of elite sport. Players are expected to absorb pressure, criticism and emotion in real time, while continuing to make split-second decisions under immense scrutiny.
On Monday night in Chennai, Kishan managed to do exactly that. Beneath the gestures towards the crowd and the visible aggression at the end of the game was a cricketer carrying personal pain, yet still finding a way to get the job done when his team needed him the most.
