Beaten, starved, raped: Wave of child abuse scandal rocks over 100 French school

France is confronting one of its most disturbing child abuse scandals after authorities confirmed investigations into allegations of violence, sexual assault and rape involving school staff responsible for supervising young children in schools and daycare centres. Prosecutors say investigations are now under way involving 84 preschools, around 20 primary schools and nearly 10 daycare centres across the capital.

“We have investigations under way in 84 preschools, about 20 primary schools and about 10 daycare centres,” Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau said, as quoted by The Guardian.

Several cases involve allegations of rape and sexual assault against preschool children.

The accusations centre around school monitors — adults responsible for children during lunch breaks, recess, nap times and after-school activities.

Unlike teachers, many are recruited by local authorities rather than directly through the national education system. Parents have accused some monitors of screaming at children, pulling their hair, denying them food and, in some cases, sexually assaulting children in their care.

Lawyers representing affected families say many parents struggled for months to get authorities to take complaints seriously.

Public outrage intensified this week after one of the first major trials linked to the scandal opened in Paris.

A 36-year-old school aide identified as David G. appeared in court accused of sexually assaulting five preschool children aged between three and five and sexually harassing two female colleagues between September 2024 and April 2025.

The defendant denies the accusations. Investigators say police gathered testimony from young children who described inappropriate touching in their own words.

The accused reportedly admitted to breaking school conduct rules, including allowing children to sit on his lap, but denied any abuse.

Outside the courtroom, activists and parents gathered demanding tougher punishments for crimes involving children.

“We’re hoping for a real conviction, a harsh one, because there are so few when it comes to sexual assaults on children,” a protester named Anne told reporters.

If convicted, the accused faces up to 10 years in prison and a fine of 150,000 euros.

Some of the most painful testimony has come from parents who say their children showed signs of severe distress long before the alleged abuse was uncovered.

Lawyer Louis Cailliez, who represents two Paris families, described the case of a three-year-old boy who became terrified of entering school after allegedly being abused by a monitor already facing earlier complaints of violence.

The scandal has also placed heavy political pressure on authorities. Paris mayor Emmanuel Grgoire has pledged sweeping action, while city officials say dozens of school aides have already been suspended.

According to officials, Paris suspended 78 aides during the first three months of 2026, including 31 suspected of sexual abuse. More trials linked to allegations against non-teaching school staff are expected in the coming months.

France’s independent commission, CIIVISE, estimates that around 160,000 children are raped or sexually assaulted in the country every year.
